Acupuncture and fertility: acupuncture treatments can be effective in assisting both male and female fertility, by enabling the body to regain its natural balance and rhythm. Evidence supports the ability of acupuncture to help regulate endocrine function, leading to an increased chance of conception (Wong et al, 2008). A growing body of evidence also supports the effectiveness of acupuncture in increasing the chances of successful IVF treatment.
Acupuncture and pregnancy: in pregnant women, acupuncture may help to:
- Relieve pain (back, rib, sciatic, neck and symphysis pubis)
- Improve mood and energy levels
- Reduce anxiety, insomnia and depression
- Alleviate nausea and heartburn
- Reduce swelling (legs, carpal tunnel and varicose veins)
- Treat hypertension, anaemia and itching
- Turn a breech baby
- Induce an overdue baby
Pre-Birth Acupuncture Or Acupuncture Before Labour
A series of weekly treatments, from week 36 or 37, pre-birth acupuncture prepares the body for labour. Points are used according to your individual needs and pregnancy history. They include points to ripen and dilate the cervix, to ensure your baby is in the right position, and to promote optimal energy and stamina for labour and childbirth. Women who have these treatments report feeling calmer and more focussed during labour and childbirth.
Pre-birth treatments have been proven in studies to enable:
- 35% reduction in the number of inductions (for women having their first baby, this was a 43% reduction)
- 31% reduction in the epidural rate
- 32% reduction in emergency caesarean delivery
- 9% increase in normal vaginal births
There was no difference in the onset of early labour in those women receiving pre-birth acupuncture (Betts 2006).
My first pregnancy was ten months of nausea, heartburn, swelling and carpal tunnel culminating in an unsuccessful hospital induction, a 36 hour labour and an emergency caesarean. Second time around I was determined to have a more enjoyable and natural experience. When I discovered my baby was breech I went to Melanie to see if she could turn the baby with acupuncture. The moxibustion treatment was successful and she continued to treat me once a week for the remainder of my pregnancy. My energy levels were lifted, my heartburn was almost nonexistent and my swollen and achy limbs were remedied. I found myself counting the days until my next treatment and breathing a sigh of relief as I came away from the session.
As my due date approached and the threat of induction or a caesarean loomed, I became more and more determined to go into labour and give birth naturally. I was given a cut-off point by the hospital and Melanie supported me in the ensuing weeks until I did indeed go into labour. With the acupressure points Melanie had taught me, along with yoga and breathing, I managed to labour with virtually no pain relief. Acupuncture enabled me to cope throughout my pregnancy and after giving birth. I felt calm and at one with my situation.
