Autumn

Change is afoot as it’s the point of ‘Cold Dew’ or frost according to the Chinese 24 solar returns, a transition from coolness to coldness. Another turning point of the year and the season of the Metal element.

The organs are the lungs (inspiration) and large intestine(letting go). The lungs are referred to as the ‘fragile or tender’organ in ancient texts, the time of year when our lungs can be more vulnerable to coughs and colds.

Here are a few points that can help strengthen our immune system or protective qi at this change of seasons.

  • Lung 1&2: Tapping or using gua sha over these points can help activate the energy of the lungs and help clear a cold/cough/breathing issue.
  • Large intestine 4* & 11: Acupressure here can help to reduce a fever or clear heat and rashes with skin conditions.

Many breathing and skin issues becoming more apparent at this time of year in our clinics. The lungs have a close link to our skin in Chinese medicine and the large intestines clear out waste products, supporting a healthy microbiome for the gut and skin.

  • If you are doing this on yourself, find the points gently and feel for a tender spot or ache, when you are ready inhale through your nose for about 4 counts and on the exhale press on the point, breathing out through your mouth for 5 counts.
  • Each time you inhale visualise you are breathing in revitalising energy or Qi through your nose and taking your breath down to your belly. On each exhale the breath through your mouth or nose and press down on the points feeling for the tender spot. On each inhale release the pressure.
  • Do this for about 6-10 deep breaths either bilaterally or one side at a time. If you are doing this for another, use a lighter touch to begin, feel for the point and gently massage for 1-2 minutes on each side.
  • You can also add one drop of essential oil to your finger tip to activate these points.
